Exploring Yuen Long and New Territories backstreets on foot in Hong Kong | 4K 60FPS Walking Tour

Yuen Long is one of Hong Kong's new towns. Though among the slowest to grow, the arrival of the West Rail (today known as the Tuen Ma line) in 2003 changed the area's fortunes and it now occupies a space as one of the more bustling urban centers in the New Territories. It still retains a lot of its charm, and while it might not have the glitz and glamour of, say, Central or TST, you can see much of real HK life on display here, with people buying and selling produce from the local area and older people sat outside playing chess.

As you might expect, this video focuses on the segment of Castle Peak Road that hosts much of the independent commercial activity in the district. It stays far away from the YOHO mega-development, which has entirely taken over the area east of the drainage ditch on Fung Yau Street, and instead moves up and down the western area of the town.

Yuen Long and its rapid development is one of the reasons I started this channel. I used to spend a lot of time in Yuen Long before the development of YOHO Mall (or the rebranding of the Sun Yuen Long Centre), and seeing the area change so rapidly and unrelentingly made me want to record these places before they changed. While YOHO is held back by a rain tunnel now - where this video ends - it's only a matter of time until it creeps across into the area this video covers. The relative merits of this are for others to debate, but I hope that this video stands the test of time as Yuen Long continues to change.

Postscript: There's a cut in the middle (toward the end of the Hi Lee Path section) as someone collapsed due to the heat and I stopped filming to see if I could help. This was during the early June heatwave and it was, as expected, very hot. Stay hydrated!
