What is neocolonialism?

Neocolonialism refers to the continued economic and political dominance of former colonial powers over their former colonies or other developing countries. It is a system of indirect control where former colonial powers maintain their influence over the economies, politics, and cultures of other countries through economic aid, loans, investments, and military support.

The term “neocolonialism” was coined by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and popularized by Ghanaian president Kwame Nkrumah in his 1965 book Neo-Colonialism: The Last Stage of Imperialism. According to Nkrumah, neocolonialism represents a sophisticated form of control replacing direct colonization.

Neocolonialism is characterized by economic dependency, cultural domination, and political control. Economic dependency refers to the former colonies’ reliance on their past rulers for financial support, leading to economic policies that benefit the latter. Cultural domination, on the other hand, manifests through the widespread use of the colonial powers’ languages, religions, and education systems, eroding local identities. Lastly, political control over former colonies is maintained by influencing their political leaders to prioritize former colonial interests, often undermining democratic principles.

Neocolonialism has significant consequences on the economies, politics, and social structures of the affected nations. These include underdevelopment, debt bondage, and environmental degradation, among others.
