Criminal Cases against Member of Parliament (MPs) in India 🇮🇳 || ‎by ‪@Eduflation‬  

Every candidate contesting an election to Parliament is required to file an affidavit to declaring Criminal cases against him including pending cases.

In 2004, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a notification requiring all Members of Parliament to file a declaration of their assets and liabilities with the Speaker of Lok Sabha or the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, within 90 days of taking their seat in Parliament. The ECI also requires MPs to update their declarations every year.

🔴 According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) released in September 2023, 40% of sitting MPs in India have declared criminal cases against themselves. This includes 25% of MPs with serious criminal cases, such as murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, and crimes against women.

The report found that 306 of the 763 sitting MPs analysed have declared criminal cases against them. This includes cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, and crimes against women.

Out of 306 MPs, 194 MPs have Serious Criminal Cases. 11 MPs have murder cases against them. 32 MPs have attempt to murder cases against them. 21 MPs have crime against women cases against them.

The report also found that the percentage of MPs with criminal cases varies significantly from state to state. The highest percentage of MPs with criminal cases is in Kerala (79%), followed by Bihar (73%), Maharashtra (57%), and Telangana (54%).

Total Average Assests of 763 MPs is 38.33 crores. Average Assets of MPs with Criminal Cases is 50.03 crores, and MPs without Criminal Cases is 30.50 crores. Out of 763 MPs, 53 are Billionaires.

🔴 Out of 763 MPs, only 111 MPs are women that means only 15% are female.
