My name is Zen World, and I make Dance Music Production Tutorials Here on Youtube. In this tutorial, we go over how to make your drums smack like Pawsa and Michael BIBI. There are some dope techniques we can utilize to get our drums to hit.

The first most important tip is Sound Selection of your drums. Drums that smack tend to be a lot shorter, snappier, and don't have much sustain to them. Reference any PAWSA or Michael Bibi track, and you will notice that when specific drums smack, they tend to be short and punchy. It's always better to start with drums that have been made shorter over shortening existing ones yourself.

The 2nd trick we have is to utilize Transient shapers on your drums. Transient shapers help shape your sound dynamically to give you a snappier response. I personally love using these plugins on my Kick and Tops to get the right amount of click/thump in them.

The 3rd trick we can use is Dynamic EQ. Instead of applying a constant boost to your tops, we can add a more tasteful dynamic notch that preserves our velocity parameters. In this video, I show you how to apply it on a closed hat, but don't let that be where you stop. Dynamic EQs can work wonders on any drum and even the master to bring your high end to life.

The Fourth trick we can use is to compress individual drums to shape them. Similar to the transient shaper, compression can help dynamically shape sounds to have more smack by allowing your transient to remain the same volume while reducing the sustain. For this, try using more brutal knees if you really want to overdo it on the smack department and keep your attack times slow.

The fifth trick is to process your drums in a bus where you will compress, saturate, and glue the drums together. In this stage, you mustn't ruin your transients with compressors running fast attacks or over saturating your drums. Keep it simple and accentuate your drum. Most of the work will be done individually using the above tricks.

Finally, the last thing to mention is the MASTER. In music production, we have various stages where we could mess up, but the MASTER is probably the most common. Don't run compressors with super low attacks if you are trying to preserve your smack. Try using higher attacks and aim to accentuate the track.
