The Biorhythm of Humans and Animals is Significantly Influenced by Light
The wavelength of light, the intensity of illumination, and the duration of exposure are all crucial factors. An optimized barn lighting system increases fattening and milk yields, promotes calf growth, lowers electricity costs, and enhances the overall well-being of animals. Detailed information on the exact correlation between lighting and milk yield can be found in our Barn Lighting Catalogue.
Barn Lighting with LEDs
Lighting in barns and its effect on animals is a widely discussed topic. The fact that lighting has a direct impact on growth, milk production, and animal health is undisputed. But it’s not only the animals that benefit from modern, customized barn lighting—the farm operation itself does as well.
With LED barn lighting, energy costs can be drastically reduced, and modern technology also saves valuable time. But what specific advantages does LED barn lighting offer, and how exactly does it affect the animals? What investment should be expected when switching to LEDs, and over what timeframe does the system pay for itself?
Benefits for the Animals
In short, professional LED barn lighting is not only more cost-efficient and effective but also beneficial for both milk yield and animal growth. Research shows that a tailored lighting concept—whether for dairy cows, young stock, or dry cows—increases productivity as well as the animals’ well-being.
Cattle are dichromatic, seeing mainly in the blue-green spectrum, whereas humans can also perceive the red spectrum. For this reason, a specialized LED barn lighting system with, in this case, 6,000 Kelvin is far more comfortable and advantageous for the animals. Anything below that contains a higher proportion of red light.
Increased light absorption through the skin raises the animals’ levels of vitamins A, D, and beta-carotene, while targeted nerve stimulation of the pineal gland’s melatonin balance can be achieved. This is crucial for a healthy day-night rhythm, fertility, immune function, growth, and milk production.
Modern LED barn lighting can also be easily automated, switching at night to a mode in which red light predominates. This allows twilight-adapted animals such as cattle to experience nighttime as dark as possible, while humans can still maintain visibility during inspections. As mentioned, cattle cannot see red light but have superior low-light vision compared to humans. For restful recovery phases, it therefore makes sense to keep night-time conditions as dark as possible for them.
Cost Savings
But it’s not only the animals that benefit from such lighting—the entire farm operation gains as well. Whereas barns previously relied mainly on metal-halide lamps, more and more facilities are switching to modern LED barn lighting.
With a lifespan of 100,000 hours—roughly 45 years—and virtually maintenance-free operation, it’s no wonder this lighting technology is convincing. Energy consumption, and therefore energy costs, are about one-quarter of those associated with traditional halide lamps. For a 1,000 m² dairy barn, only about three-quarters of the number of LED fixtures are required compared to halide lamps.
While retrofitting or new installations require an initial investment, the system typically pays for itself within just 2.5 years and from then on generates significantly lower costs. Automated processes further save time and simplify daily operations. Adding the improved livestock performance to the lower energy costs makes LED barn lighting an unequivocal investment.
#Clear Facts and an Overview of the Advantages
#High luminous efficiency and optimized light color
#Special heat sink design for improved heat dissipation
#Long service life with little to no maintenance
#Splash-proof, dustproof, and ammonia-resistant
Dimmable (3-in-1) with integrated lighting control—ideal for lowering energy costs, improving comfort for both humans and animals, and optimizing cattle performance
Over the long term (2–5 years), there is no reason not to choose LED barn lighting. It ultimately delivers only benefits—streamlining operations, optimizing livestock performance, and significantly reducing energy costs.
