Settled in the south-central region of Pennsylvania, Norfolk Southern's Lurgan Branch runs between Hagerstown, Maryland and the capitol city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. With a wide variety of trains, from manifest, coal, intermodal, and others, the Lurgan is a fan favorite while in the area.

I spent a couple days in the area back in June of 2019, and caught a pretty good bit of action while there. We started our day near the north end of the line, and worked south ending up actually on the Hagerstown District at Shenandoah Junction, West Virginia by sunset. Traffic on the Lurgan can be hit or miss, depending on the day, and while this day wasn't particularly busy, it gave us a chance to hit some of the more popular spots on the branch between trains.

During a mid-day lull in action on Norfolk Southern, we took the chance to shoot the CSX local D773 working in Chambersburg; and then later that evening, the Hannover-Hagerstown local D795 crossing the Lurgan main at CP Town with a nice SD40-2 leader.

All around, this was a great introduction to the Lurgan for myself, and I'll definitely be returning for a future trip to highlight a few other great locations!
