Monaco’s first marine educational area — or aire marine éducative (AME) — has used baited remote underwater video system (BRUVS) technology to teach schoolchildren about marine conservation and to nurture a new generation of future ocean champions.

Children from year 7 at École Saint-Charles participated in the AME, learning how the BRUVS technology is used in Monaco’s Larvotto marine protected area (MPA).

The 2025 AME programme culminated on 24 June 2025 with the 'Conférence pour enfants unis pour l’océan', where participating children discussed the importance of marine conservation and ocean science.

The event was attended by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, who addressed the children.

BRUVS technology has been deployed in the Larvotto MPA since 2023 as part of a collaborative project between the Association monégasque pour la protection de la nature (AMPN), Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, Community Jameel, THALASSA Marine Research and Environmental Awareness and Blue Abacus.

A report of the BRUVS survey, published in 2025, revealed a thriving, seasonally dynamic ecosystem in the Larvotto MPA, underscoring the reserve's crucial role in safeguarding marine biodiversity.
