There are various theories, but Okinoshima is the stage of the myth "White Rabbit Deity" recorded in "The Record of Ancient Matters" compiled 1300 years ago.
The contents of the myth are as follows.
A long time ago, a white rabbit tried to cross from Okinoshima to Cape Keta on the opposite shore, and tricked the sharks in the sea to land there.
When the rabbit tells the sharks that he has been deceived, the angry sharks skin the white rabbit and leave it naked.
Okuninushi-no-mikoto (Deity) said to the white rabbit, ``Wash your body with the clear water of the water gate and apply cattail pollen on your body,'' and the white rabbit returned to its original body.
