Don Mattingly had a prime unlike that of your average first baseman. Mattingly was as pure a hitter as any throughout the majority of the 1980s. Along with his offensive prowess, he also showcased elite defensive abilities. His defense puts him in the conversation as one of the best defensive first basemen of all time, alongside Keith Hernandez, the surefire number 1. The race for who would win the batting title in 1984 became a story in itself (we break that down in the video). The Yankees may not have had much postseason success with him on their squad, but because of Don Mattingly, New York was better off. The leadership, humble nature, and ballplayer that you got in Mattingly made watching New York baseball at least somewhat bearable despite the lack of a World Series ring during his career.
