News: The US has begun construction of a new city in Gaza under Hamas's nose.
The US is promoting a plan to create new settlements in Israeli-controlled Gaza to accommodate refugees and reduce Hamas's support base.

This refers to the Israeli-controlled area on the eastern side of the separation line established by the ceasefire agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump.

According to American, Israeli, and Arab sources, American engineering teams are on site clearing debris and unexploded ordnance, preparing the site for construction, although construction has not yet begun, the Wall Street Journal reports.

This move reflects a tacit recognition that the disarmament of Hamas and its removal from power—one of the main goals of the American 20-point peace plan—is not expected anytime soon. To prevent stagnation and maintain momentum, the Americans are promoting a plan to create "alternative safe communities" in what they call the "Green Zone." It's worth noting that this area has been under Israeli control since October and accounts for approximately half of Gaza.

The new settlements are intended to accommodate Palestinians who lost their homes during the war and provide them with temporary housing, schools, and hospitals while permanent housing is being built. This model is intended to attract civilians, distance them from areas where Hamas retains control, and thus, over time, reduce the influence of this terrorist organization. Incidentally, despite a certain rise in Hamas's popularity after the ceasefire, thanks to steps to "restore order" and the image of resistance to Israel, many Gazans have expressed a desire to distance themselves from its rule.

The first phase of the project will be carried out in Rafah, which was almost completely destroyed during the fighting. However, this American initiative is causing alarm in the Arab world. Donor countries refuse to invest in the reconstruction of Hamas-controlled areas, but are also reluctant to finance development in Israeli-controlled territory. Egypt fears that the concentration of Palestinians in Rafah could pave the way for their eventual displacement to Sinai—a scenario Egypt vehemently opposes.
