Visiting Overlooks on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon

Tina and I do a lot of hiking and backpacking. Some of the trips are rough. So it was nice to have a relaxing weekend for a change. For this trip, we went to the Grand Canyon North Rim.

First stop was Tuweep Campground at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Permits are required, but it wasn't hard to get them. Probably because it was July and it was hot. Really hot. We actually had the campground completely to ourselves. There is also the fact that it's in the middle of nowhere, down a very long dirt road that eventually required 4WD. High clearance was a plus.

So why go to Tuweep Campground? Well, that's because it's right next to the Toroweap Overlook. Toroweap has some of the most amazing views of the grand canyon. It's a sheer 3000' drop from the rim down to the Colorado. It's slightly terrifying. And absolutely amazing.

After checking out Toroweap Overlook, we headed back to camp. We woke up way too early for my liking to try to avoid the summer heat, packed up camp and left. Day 2 included stops to several of the scenic overlooks & sights on the north rim of the Grand Canyon: Bright Angel Point, North Kaibab, Grand Canyon Lodge, Angel's Window, Cape Royal and Point Imperial.

Looking down into the canyon was amazing. And it always blows my mind to think I've hiked down to the bottom....and it makes me want to do it again.

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon has the bonus of being much less crowded than the more popular South Rim. It's much higher as well, so it's less desert and more pine/aspen forest. If you haven't visited, check it out.
