Today I cook a local, holiday cider from the fruit of the toyon plant, Heteromeles arbutifolia, the official City Plant of Los Angeles. After boiling the fruit, the astringency goes away, the cyanide in the seeds is deactivated, and it tastes like tart, cinnamon apples. It’s quite fascinating. Let me know if you’ve ever eaten or cooked with toyon! As always, remember to practice safe foraging by only harvesting plants you can 100% identify. And toyon is a native plant, important to the local ecosystem, so make sure to gather with minimal impact to the plant.
