This video shows how a small ISO Quality Management System does not need document numbers. In the previous video, we talked about headaches caused by insane document numbers. There is a simple test to prove that system document numbers do not mean much. Can you tell me what these numbers and words mean?

Well,
• WI-TIS-012 – in Company A language means: quality management system document TIS-012 Assembly Work Instruction
• SOP-QP-20.01-01 in company B language means: SOP, Statistical Techniques
• Korrekturmaßnahme means Corrective Action in German.

The bottom line is that we could not pass the test because we do not speak these languages: either Company A, or Company B, or, for most of us, German. Document numbers in small management systems do not add value and, therefore, are waste. You may run out of unique titles and will need document numbers if your system supports complex developments. Unless justified, numbers do not contribute to the purpose of documents and, therefore, are a waste. A title in your native language, with its revision, is sufficient identification of a document. Quality Management System Document Numbers are only justified when needed!
