Promoting "The History of Herne Bay Railwaymen's & Friendly Societies Convalescent Home" exhibition at the Seaside Museum, Herne Bay between 28th January - 25th March 2023, with a history talk on Friday 24th March.

"Journey to Herne Bay" (the Herne Bay Railway Convalescent Home song) was penned by Thomas Bertram Southall in 1938, under the title "Home Song" and was written to the tune of that well known folk song "John Brown's Body".

Thomas was born in Wolverhampton in 1880. He served as a Goods Agent at Coventry for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway. He was a trade unionist in the role of secretary for the Railway Clerks Association, West Midlands Divisional Council, now the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association.

Thomas died in 1961 in his home town of Wolverhampton. To the best of my knowledge, his song has never been recorded until now that is.
Local folk singer Nigel Hobbins kindly recorded two versions of the song in 2022, donating the proceeds to support the upkeep of the Seaside Museum, Herne Bay.
