This is Part Two of the Sifu Dom Békés Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu Seminar. In this section Sifu Dom teaches and demonstrates the Chi Sao (Sticking Hands) that trains the practitioner to develop contact reflexes that are so important in making the Wing Chun techniques effective. The practitioner should over time allow themselves to be guided by the trained sensitivity to the opponents energy coupled with an almost instant response counter attack developed from the contact reflexes. Contact reflexes operate at 0.05 of a second. Visual reflexes at 0.2 of a second. A straight punch can travel at 0.11 of a second. Training both visual and contact reflexes over a long period of time are important to be able to read the opponents intended moves. Similarly to sports like Tennis where the practitioner reads the visual cues of the other player because the ball is travelling too fast to react to in the moment they must already have some idea of where the ball is going to go. The role of training and practise is to become familiar with the signals of the intended moves given off by your opponent and to naturally begin to react to those cues, coupled with the strategy of positioning oneself to stay one step ahead of the opponent (Fighting on the Blind Side). As opposed to thinking which technique to use which is too slow. You can't think of a technique and try to use it. You will be out of synchronisation with the opponent and far too slow to seize the moment. Fighting happens at the speed of reflex action not at the speed of mental thought! By training your contact reflexes and your visual reflexes you will have created the chance to stay one step ahead of your opponent. Wing Chun practised poorly is often down to the lack of self mastery of the individual practitioner who does not understand the above principle and tries to think of what to do instead of be guided by the proper training and reflexes. The solution to this is to find a good master with the proper training method and practise diligently. Good Luck in your Chi Sao Practise! Sifu Dom Békés
