Описание к видео data@breakfast: Wim Hugo “Open Science and Societal Benefit: It Needs a Bit of Work!”

Data@Breakfast is an initiative of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Big Data and Informatics Research Flagship. Traditionally it takes place on the last Friday of every month at 7:30 (SAST).

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the talks are now online.

In his online talk (14 August 2020) Wim Hugo (Director of Strategy designate of the ISC World Data System) spoke about “Open Science and Societal Benefit: It Needs a Bit of Work!”

Abstract: The increasing emphasis on Open Science, and increased availability of data and evidence, as a result, has created expectations that decision and policy-making will improve too This assumption requires closer examination, because there are many systemic reasons why this is not a simple proposition. In order to understand the issue, we look at three perspectives - after an introduction to Open Science and its current status.
Part 1: Open Science - aspirations, rationale, objectives, impediments, and legitimate concerns.
Part 2: The Perspective of Science: how does science work, and how does it arrive at facts and evidence? What are the current issues with this?
Part 3: The Perspective of Society, Decision- and Policy-makers: how do we make decisions, and why?
Part 4: Gaps in the system, and what to do about them: A conceptual model, review of issues, remedies, and future improvements.
