Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. It affects both humans and animals and is more common in tropical and subtropical regions, especially after heavy rainfall or flooding.

🔍 Key Facts

Cause: Leptospira bacteria

Transmission:

Contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with urine of infected animals (especially rats, dogs, cattle, pigs)

Entry through broken skin, eyes, nose, or mouth

High-Risk Groups:

Farmers

Veterinarians

Sewer workers

People exposed to floodwaters or recreational freshwater (swimmers, kayakers, etc.)

🧬 Symptoms

Leptospirosis has a wide range of symptoms and may occur in two phases:

First phase (mild to moderate symptoms):

Fever

Headache

Muscle aches (especially calves and lower back)

Chills

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Red eyes

Skin rash

Second phase (severe): (Weil’s disease)

Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes)

Kidney or liver failure

Meningitis

Internal bleeding

Respiratory distress

🩺 Severe leptospirosis can be life-threatening without treatment.

🧪 Diagnosis

Blood or urine tests to detect Leptospira

May include:

Microscopic agglutination test (MAT)

PCR testing

Serology

💊 Treatment

Mild cases: Oral antibiotics like doxycycline or amoxicillin

Severe cases: Hospitalization with IV antibiotics (e.g., penicillin G or ceftriaxone)

Supportive care may include dialysis or mechanical ventilation

🛡️ Prevention

Avoid swimming in or drinking contaminated water

Wear protective clothing if working with animals or in flood-prone areas

Control rodent populations

Vaccinate animals (where applicable)

Doxycycline may be used as prophylaxis in high-risk short-term exposures
