Staying ay a ryokan or a Japanese traditional inn is not cheap but it’s a one-of-a-kind experience you should try at least once. It’s a cultural immersion while getting to enjoy things that only a ryokan can offer.

Here are my ryokan recommendations in Tokyo and Kyoto. I picked those that are within the same price range as Ohanabo or lower and with a more traditional feel.

Japanese traditional inns are more abundant (and authentic) in Kyoto and most available ryokans in Tokyo don't offer kaiseki dinner.

TOKYO:
Edo Sakura (Shitaya) - serves breakfast
Ryokan Kamogawa (Asakusa) - serves breakfast
Cyashitsu Ryokan Asakusa (Asakusa) - serves breakfast

KYOTO - serves kaiseki and breakfast:

By the way, when we stayed at Ohanabo, the food was served at the dining room. If you'd like it served inside the room, please inquire with the staff in advance.

Also, sake or any alcohol was not included in the kaiseki meal (made a mistake on this during my recording) but they have a separate menu for it in case you'd like to try one.
