Simeon Brown on council 'nice-to-haves', energy prices | Q+A 2024

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon came out swinging at the Local Government NZ conference this week, telling councils it's time to "rein in the fantasies" on spending and return to "doing the basics brilliantly".

A day after Luxon's speech, Economic Development Minister Melissa Lee announced the Government would co-fund a World Dance Competition with Auckland Council, up to $750,000. Q+A asks Local Government Minister Simeon Brown whether this is consistent with the Government's directive to councils.

And as Energy Minister, Brown is grappling with sky-high wholesale electricity prices which are threatening jobs around the country. Q+A asks him what the Government will do.
