The Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating a possible attempted forced marriage of a 12-year-old girl that occurred in the city of Barcelona . The minor and her mother, of Pakistani nationality, presented themselves this Thursday at the Catalan police station in the Ciutat Vella district to report that the father was trying to marry the daughter against her will. According to the woman, she had received a message from her husband the previous day in which he threatened to take the girl away from her and marry her to a relative, specifically a cousin .Mother and daughter have been living for months in an association for Pakistani women, which took them in three years ago when the father of the family made a first attempt to marry the minor against her will. At that time, both decided to leave, but ended up settling back in Barcelona last summer. Now, the message that the father has sent to the woman has awakened fear in the minor and her mother at the possibility that the man could carry out the threat and take her away to marry her against her will.This fear led both of them, encouraged by the people of the association, to go to a Mossos police station this Thursday to report it. The officers took their statements and have opened an investigation to clarify the facts, as reported by El País . It should be remembered that forced marriage is considered a form of sexist violence and can lead to sentences of three years in prison. The case has been referred to the courts, while the minor has been cared for by the social services of the Barcelona City Council.
