August is not always marked on the calendar. Initially the sixth month in the Roman calendar, it contained 29 days. Over time, calendar reforms brought about changes, and it became the eighth month with 31 days. In 8 BC, it was renamed "Augustus" in honor of Rome's first emperor, Julius Augustus Caesar.
August begins with the celebration of Lammas Day in the British Isles and Northern Europe. This seasonal holiday marks the midpoint between the summer solstice and the fall equinox, and people come together to celebrate the summer harvest.
Known as the Dog Days of Summer, August coincides with the rise of Sirius, the brightest star visible from Earth. In addition, this month offers a spectacular display with the peak of the Perseids meteor shower and the appearance of the Kappa Cygnids.
August is the month of important historical events. On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain, eventually reaching North America. On August 22, 1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre. August 6 and August 9, 1945 saw the detonation of atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and on August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, DC.
August is notoriously volcanically active, and has seen catastrophic eruptions. The famous eruption of Mount Vesuvius occurred on August 24, 79 AD, destroying Pompeii and Herculaneum. The eruption of Krakatoa on August 26, 1883 killed approximately 36,000 people. As recently as August 2022, the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland erupted.
August is vacation time for many Europeans. Major cities put up "Gone Fishin'" signs as locals and tourists look for cooler destinations. With the school holidays in full swing, it's time to relax and escape from the summer heat.
