In Frame S3(Ep.7) Memories of a Division _ Full Episode

Magnum Photos photographer Thomas Hoepker received much acclaim for photographing and publicizing the heroic side of boxing champion Muhammad Ali when racial discrimination was at its worst, and for spending three years in East Germany in the 1970s to introduce to the world the lives of its people. Recently the renowned photographer visited Korea, where he traveled with art student Choi Ji-young to places that still bear the traces of national division and war.
The two travelers first take the DMZ train to Cheorwon and tour Baekmagoji, the Second Tunnel, the Korean Workers' Party Headquarters and the Seungilgyo Bridge, all of which witnessed the tragedy of the Korean War.
Their second destination is Korea's largest port-city of Busan, where the past throbs beneath the flashy, modern metropolis it has become today. The Yeongdodaegyeo Bridge, which was a popular meeting point among refugees during the Korean War, still bears the traces of life from more than six decades ago. The 40 Step Culture and Tourism Theme Street and Ibagu Road are among the places that witnessed the struggles of war refugees and the most tumultuous period in the history of Busan.
The final leg of this trip is Gyodongdo Island, which is surrounded by a barbed wire fence. Across the fence is the North Korean territory, which can be seen with the naked eye. Located just two kilometers from the North Korean village of Yeonbaek, Gyodongdo, is home to many displaced people who cannot return to their hometowns in the North. The two travelers visited one of the local families, which was making preparations for the Chuseok holiday.

인종차별이 심했던 60년대에 흑인 세계권투 챔피언 무하마드 알리의 영웅적인 모습을 찍어 세상에 알리고, 70년대 독일 분단시절에는 3년간 동독에 머물면서 동독인들의 삶을 소개했던 매그넘 포토스의 거장, 토마스 횝커(Thomas Hoepker). 분단과 통일의 시대를 앞서 경험했던 작가는 미대생 최지영과 함께 슬픔과 그리움을 간직한 분단의 기억을 따라 대한민국을 여행한다.
먼저 DMZ 트레인 ‘경원선’을 타고 철원을 찾은 두 사람은 한국전쟁의 아픈 역사가 묻혀있는 백마고지와 제2땅굴, 조선노동당사, 승일교 등을 둘러보며 분단의 현실을 직시한다.
다음 여정은 대한민국 제1의 항구도시 부산. 아름다운 바다와 화려한 빌딩숲을 자랑하는 겉모습과는 달리 부산에는 눈에 보이는 것 그 이상의 숨겨진 이야기들이 있다. 한국전쟁 당시 피난민들에게 만남의 장소였던 영도대교에는 지금도 60여 년 전의 흔적들이 남아있고, 피난민들의 삶의 터전이었던 40계단과 초량 이바구길에는 격변의 시기를 온몸으로 담아낸 역사가 살아 숨 쉬고 있다.
마지막으로 섬 전체가 철책에 갇혀있는 곳, 교동도로 떠난다. 철책 너머로 보이는 북한 땅, 황해도 연백마을이 불과 2km 남짓 떨어져 있는 교동도는 실향민들의 마을이기도 한다. 추석을 하루 앞두고 송편을 빚고 있는 실향민 가족들을 만나 통일과 평화의 미래를 기원한다.
