Perkins Brailler - Factory Maintenance Procedure - Part 1 of 2

....and now for something different.

I was approached by my sister with a request to service this Braille typewriter. She had used this device during school for volunteer work to transcribe notes for the blind and after many years it had started to get gummed up. Not even being remotely familiar with this device, I was able to obtain the factory Maintenance procedure and procured all necessary tools and materials for conducting this activity.

This first video deals with procurement of needed items and disassembly. Opening the bottom cover yields a piece of paper in the unit, though that was not the primary reason for failure. The lack of oil, grease and the dirt buildup clearly is.

Once completely disassembled, it is brought outside and put in an aluminum baking pan and dusted, so that the kerosene bath can begin. Everything is covered and cleaned with a brush, top to bottom. The kerosene gets really dirty and I end up filtering it to continue. Once completely cleaned the brailler is set to drain into the pan and the kerosene is filtered and collected.

The Device is left to dry overnight, taking us to part 2.
