(Genre: HISTORICAL FICTION; CLASSIC. Year published: 1831. John Sturrock translation.) My attempt to get into French classics really paid off this time! This was an excellent, tightly-executed novel, despite some non-narrative sections that dragged on a bit. The characters colourful and vivid, the setting well-realized and atmospheric, and the social commentary razor sharp and pretty humorous at times too, although it required a bit of background knowledge on 19th century France to get everything out of it that you can. Really happy I read this; highly recommended!
