In this video I give my rationale for why I don't use or recommend ported barrels on semi-auto pistols for Everyday Carry self-defense situations.

Ported pistols or compensators on pistols are definitely advantageous in outdoor daytime competitions. Having a ported pistol barrel helps tame recoil and muzzle rise and leads to faster follow-up shots and "flatter" shooting. For self-defense, however, using a ported barrel on an EDC pistol in no light or low light situations can cause one to potentially miss their target due to: smoke and light in the line of sight causing the pistol owner to become disorientated sufficiently to miss their target.

Ported barrels redirect the "bang", explosion, light, white smoke, and noise vertically upwards instead of outwards from the pistol barrel. In low light or no light defensive situations, this may produce a flashbang effect for the pistol owner, temporarily distracting or disabling them enough to become distracted and miss their intended target. Remember that when shooting a pistol indoors in a self-defense situation, you will likely not be wearing your eye or hearing protection so the redirected "bang" (noise and smoke) from the pistol will be in front of your line of sight possibly closer to your face and chest in certain defensive situations.

Ported pistol barrels are much better suited for outdoor daytime shooting situations where the redirected noise and light from the pistol barrel blend in with the ambient light and background noise of the daytime environment. This makes the after-effects of ported barrels less noticeable outdoors during the day then at night in an enclosed space with no light or very low light. Just be more aware and careful when shooting a pistol with a ported barrel indoors!
