In a devastating turn of events, a kindergarten and hospital in Sudan were targeted by drone attacks, resulting in the tragic loss of 114 lives. The WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has strongly condemned this senseless act of violence.
The attack took place in the town of Kalogi, South Kordofan, with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) accused by both the army and the Sudan Doctors' Network. Among the deceased are 63 children, according to the UN.
The situation in Sudan has been tense since April 2023, when a power struggle erupted between the RSF and the army. The Kordofan region, situated between Khartoum and Darfur, has become a frontline in this civil war.
Initial reports suggested at least 50 deaths, including 33 children, in Kalogi, which is under army control. The WHO's monitoring system confirms 114 fatalities and 35 injuries.
A local official, Essam al-Din al-Sayed, described the drone strikes hitting a kindergarten, a hospital, and a third time as people attempted to rescue the children. The RSF has not commented, but they have previously denied harming civilians.
Survivors have been moved to Abu Jebaiha Hospital for treatment, and urgent calls for blood donations and medical support have been made. The WHO calls for an end to the violence and increased access to humanitarian aid, including health services.
The RSF also claimed control of the Heglig oil field, a pivotal moment near the southern border. Government troops have reportedly pulled back to protect the oil facilities and prevent damage.
This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan.
