Στην καρδιά της Πράγας απλώνεται η Staroměstské náměstí, η Πλατεία της Παλιάς Πόλης — ένας τόπος όπου η ιστορία, η αρχιτεκτονική και η καθημερινή ζωή συναντώνται αδιάκοπα εδώ και περισσότερους από εννέα αιώνες. Από τον 10ο αιώνα υπήρξε εμπορικό και κοινωνικό κέντρο: χώρος αγορών, εορτασμών αλλά και δραματικών ιστορικών στιγμών.
Στον νότιο τοίχο του Δημαρχείου δεσπόζει το Pražský orloj, το Αστρονομικό Ρολόι της Πράγας. Λειτουργεί αδιάλειπτα από το 1410 και θεωρείται ένα από τα παλαιότερα και πιο σύνθετα στον κόσμο. Δεν μετρά απλώς την ώρα· απεικονίζει τις θέσεις του Ήλιου και της Σελήνης, τις φάσεις της Σελήνης, τα ζώδια και διαφορετικά χρονικά συστήματα. Πρόκειται για έναν μηχανικό χάρτη του σύμπαντος, όπως το αντιλαμβανόταν ο μεσαιωνικός άνθρωπος.
Κάθε ώρα, πλήθος επισκεπτών συγκεντρώνεται για να παρακολουθήσει το θέαμα: οι Δώδεκα Απόστολοι, οι αλληγορικές μορφές — Ματαιοδοξία, Απληστία, Λαγνεία και Θάνατος — και ο σκελετός που κουνά το καμπανάκι, υπενθυμίζοντας τη φθαρτότητα της ανθρώπινης ζωής.
Θρύλοι και ιστορίες συνοδεύουν το ρολόι, εμπλουτίζοντας τη μυστηριακή του γοητεία. Η πλατεία υπήρξε μάρτυρας εκτελέσεων, εξεγέρσεων, πολιτικών συγκεντρώσεων και εορτασμών ελευθερίας. Σήμερα αποτελεί έναν από τους πιο αγαπημένους προορισμούς επισκεπτών παγκοσμίως.
In the heart of Prague lies Staroměstské náměstí — the Old Town Square — a place where history, architecture and daily life have converged for more than nine centuries. Since the 10th century, this open space functioned as the commercial and social center of the medieval city: a marketplace of goods and ideas, a stage for celebrations, and at times, for dramatic historical events.
On the southern wall of the Old Town Hall resides the most famous monument of the square: the Astronomical Clock of Prague — the Pražský orloj. Installed in 1410, it is one of the oldest and most complex astronomical clocks in the world still in uninterrupted operation. It does more than mark the time. It displays the position of the Sun and Moon, the phases of the Moon, the zodiac, and multiple time systems including medieval Bohemian, Central European and astronomical time. It is, in essence, a mechanical map of the universe as understood by medieval science.
Every hour, hundreds gather to witness the brief but remarkable procession of moving figures: the Twelve Apostles appear at the windows, while allegorical statues flank the clock — Vanity, Greed, Lust and Death. The skeletal figure of Death rings the bell, a theatrical reminder of human mortality.
Legends and myths surround the clock. According to one of the most famous, the city councilors blinded the master clockmaker to prevent him from replicating his masterpiece elsewhere. Whether true or not, this tale deepens the monument’s aura of mystery.
The square has witnessed dramatic chapters of Czech history: public executions, uprisings, political gatherings and celebrations of freedom. Here in 1621, twenty-seven Czech noblemen were executed after the defeat of the Protestant uprising — an event etched into national memory.
Today, Old Town Square is one of the most beloved destinations for visitors from around the world. It is not simply a tourist attraction; it is an open-air archive of European history, where every stone, façade and mechanical sound of the clock carries the story of centuries. In Prague, time does not only move forward. In the Old Town Square, time circulates, returns, and invites us to observe it — not only as measurement, but as memory, symbol and human experience.
