Isfahan Soh Caravanserai is one of the historical caravanserai of Iran, which was built during the Qajar era.
Soh village is one of the historical villages of Isfahan province, which is located in the northeast of this province. In fact, Abyaneh village from the north, Bideshk village from the south, Kalahrud village from the east, and Robat village and Meymeh city from the west are the neighbors of this village. Se village is one of the scenic villages of Isfahan that few people are familiar with. The first point about this village is that its correct pronunciation is Soh. Similarly, the correct pronunciation of Caravanserai is Soh Caravanserai.
The second point is that if we know what Soh means? We also remember its pronunciation more easily. Soh is actually derived from the word "Sohi" which means height.
Probably, the name of this village is its location in the mountains. Because the village of Se Isfahan is located at the foot of the Karkas mountain range. One of the reasons why this village remains unknown is the difficult road to reach it.
History of Isfahan Soh Caravanserai
According to the inscription on the entrance of the caravanserai, this building was built in 1223, parallel to the reign of Fath Ali Shah Qajar. And on this stone inscription, the name of the founder of the caravanserai "Abul Qasem Isfahani" is mentioned. According to historical texts, the mountain road of Ghahrud and Soh was used by caravans and travelers as a highway in the south of Iran until the middle of the Qajar era.
Architecture of Isfahan Soh Caravanserai
Isfahan Soh Caravanserai is built on a rectangular plot with an area of 3000 square meters. Contrary to the usual style of the old Iranian caravanserais, the front of the Soh Isfahan Caravanserai is not prominent. This is probably due to the steep slope in the entrance alley of the building.
The only impressive part of the main building is the semi-domed moqrans of the entrance building. After the main building, the entrance vestibule is a simple square with two platforms and stairs on the sides. In the architectural style of the Safavid era, this staircase leads to a large loft.
This building is one of the buildings with four porches that are designed symmetrically. There are four porches in the middle of the sides and four round towers in the four corners of the building. There are a total of twenty rooms around this central courtyard.
Among these twenty cells, four cells are used as entrances to stables or camel houses. According to the general structure of the old Iranian caravanserais, Shotorkhan caravansary has been built all around the building. The access ways to this outer corridor are also the four cells in the four corners of the building.
Where is Isfahan Se Caravanserai?
Isfahan Soh caravanserai is located in Soh village, one of the villages of Shahin Shahr and Meymeh in the northeast of Isfahan province. This village is located in Morche Khort village and in the central part of Shahinshahr city. In simpler words, there is a path to Se village between Meyme city and Morche Khort village. The distance from Soh village to Shahin Shahr is about 65 km and to Isfahan city is about 100 km.
