Imagine you’re walking early in the morning… a dog follows you. You’re not sure if it’s friendly or dangerous. That’s reality for millions of Indians every day. In 2024 alone, India recorded over 37 lakh dog bites and 54 deaths due to rabies, one of the highest numbers of stray dog attacks anywhere in the world. Now, the Supreme Court has stepped in. In its latest verdict, it has ordered that all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR must be removed from the streets within 6–8 weeks and shifted to shelters. The court said, public safety comes first. But this decision has sparked debate. Animal lovers say it goes against the Animal Birth Control Rules which promote sterilisation, vaccination, and releasing dogs back. They fear mass removal could harm the animals and disrupt communities.
