The research project ZERO-Abécédaire is a concentrated compendium of the ZERO art. 26 terms
that are central to it were presented by the scientific team of the ZERO foundation and international
scholars from art theory and history, music, sociology and theater.

The ZERO movement was
examined from an interdisciplinary perspective and previously unpublished archival material will be
made accessible to the public. The result are a compendium of the versatility of one of the most
important avant-garde movements from the postwar period in Germany.

This is the first time that a project researching the avant-garde movement of the 1950s/60s has
broken away from a chronological approach and presented the ZERO story in a differentiated way.


The workshop started with A for Atelier, as a place of work, exhibition or presentation, and ended
with Z for ZERO, the definition of which is the outcome of the workshop.

In 2024, Hatje Cantz Verlag, Berlin, will publish "Opening the Archive: The ABC's of ZERO" - a
comprehensive anthology with the results of the research project. The research results will also be
made available to the public online on a specially created website.
