Greece Seismic Crisis Update | 1,700+ Earthquakes, Geologist Analysis

In early 2025, the Greek island of Santorini and its neighboring regions experienced a significant seismic crisis. Beginning on January 27, a series of undersea earthquakes, known as a seismic swarm, occurred northeast of Santorini, between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos. Over 2,000 earthquakes were recorded, with magnitudes reaching up to 5.3.

The most intense period of seismic activity prompted Greek authorities to declare a state of emergency on February 6. This led to the evacuation of thousands of residents and tourists, the closure of schools, and the deployment of emergency services to the affected areas.

By late February, the frequency and magnitude of the earthquakes began to decline. Scientists monitoring the situation reported a gradual decrease in seismic activity, leading to the return of many evacuees and the reopening of schools on March 4.

Despite the reduction in seismic events, authorities remained cautious. In mid-February, plans were announced to construct an evacuation port on Santorini to facilitate safe departures in case of future emergencies.
As of early April 2025, Santorini has largely returned to normal, with seismic activity significantly decreased. However, authorities and scientists continue to monitor the region closely, recognizing the island's history of seismic and volcanic activity and the need for ongoing vigilance.
