In this talk, Sayalay Dipankara Theri explains the importance of developing deep concentration as the foundation of insight wisdom that leads towards Nibbāna.

She describes the practices of the first to fourth material jhānas, the fifth to eighth immaterial jhānas, the contemplation on the thirty-two parts of the body, insight meditation on matter (rūpa), and how one can progress further with insight into nama (mind), and eventually to see one's past and future lives.

The understanding of dependent origination (cause and effect) arises only with the ability to analyse one's past, present and future lives. This understanding is the realization of the second noble truth.

Understanding of the four noble truths is necessary in order to arrive at Nibbāna. If one does not practice according to the four noble truths and the noble eight-fold paths, it is not possible to attain any stage of enlightenment at all.
