This video is all about the cholinergic transmission. neurotransmission refers to the transmission of a nerve impulse from one neuron to another or an effector organ, like a muscle or gland. when the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is used for this transmission then it is called cholinergic transmission. cholinergic transmission occurs all over the human body nervous system, and occurs in the CNS as well as in the peripheral nervous system. in the peripheral nervous system acetylcholine is the primary neurotransmitter of the parasympathetic nervous system. in addition to it, cholinergic transmission occurs in all the sympathetic ganglia between the preganglionic fibres and postganglionic fibres. while in contrast a few synapses between the postganglionic neurons of the sympathetic nervous system and the effector organs also use cholinergic transmission. for example, sweat gland innervation of the sympathetic nervous system used cholinergic transmission.
the neurons with release the acetylcholine are called cholinergic neurons while the receptors which detect and binds to the acetylcholine are called cholinergic receptors or cholinoceptors.
the cholinergic transmission occurs in six steps that is synthesis acetylcholine, storage of acetylcholine in vesicles, the release of the acetylcholine from vesicles, binding of the acetylcholine to cholinoceptors, metabolism or degradation of acetylcholine and the last step is the recycling of the choline back to the cholinergic neurons.
in addition to it, we have some agents or drugs which affect cholinergic transmission at different stages, these agents include hemicholinium, vesamicol, botulinum toxin, black widow spider toxin, cholinergic antagonists, cholinergic agonists and anticholinesterase or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors.
