Galatians 6:2 instructs us to “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Romans 12:15 says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” We are blessed to be members of the Body of Christ, surrounded by people willing to help us as we the journey of life together. We also need to know the healthy way to help carry the burdens of others to avoid having their burdens attach themselves to us. We pray you can join us on a journey of transformation into the image and character of Jesus. “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18)

We are all to bear one another's burdens, but some are specially called by the Lord to do so. This lesson discusses the gift of burden bearing and explores the character and experience of the burden-bearing personality, including the wounding that occurs when the gift is misunderstood or misappropriated. Healing the wounded burden bearer requires prayer for healing of the wounded spirit, as well as teaching and training in the gift.

The Blessing of Burden Bearing
If soul and spirit are properly settled into separate functions, then our Lord can lay a burden into our spirit and we are not torn up everywhere all at once. Our own emotions and thoughts remain undisturbed, and we maintain sufficient detachment to identify, pray and remain in balance. Our hearts and minds may grapple with a problem, but our spirit, aligned with God, is at peace.

While not all of us are "burden bearing personalities," burden bearing is still the first calling and primary labor of every Christian, and the key service through which we may come into the fullness of relationship with God. This lesson focuses on the joy we can receive through the gift of burden bearing and intercession.

Burden bearing can be a struggle; it is sometimes tiring and painful as we actually carry the pain of another as our own, but it doesn't have to be a dark cloud. The Lord has ways to keep burden bearing from becoming a BURDEN. We learn to let go of the false comforts of spiritual pride. Unhealed, we don't trust God to carry burdens; we believe we must do so, for ourselves and everyone else. This distrust leads to spiritual pride: "I have to bear this because no one else is able." But the BLESSED BURDEN BEARER trusts God will do His part and takes only that load which is our own-given to us by the Lord-and no more. Unhealed, we go searching for burdens to bear, refusing to be dependent upon God to send us out. But the BLESSED BURDEN BEARER stands and waits on God, helpless without His direction.

We should receive God's comfort with the pain but unhealed, we bear burdens in the flesh and feel the pain without the comfort. Healed, we take burdens to the cross, and become instruments for God's comfort to be expressed through us to the person for whom we intercede. Experiencing this comfort, the pain takes on a rich sweetness, causing Scripture to come alive in our hearts.

How can you check to see if you are bearing only the burdens offered to you by the Lord?
Asking the following questions may help:
Is judgment or anger attached to the burden you carry for another?
Do you feel continual confusion? Are you torn between disparate thoughts and perceptions?
Have you borne this burden for a long time without clarity or relief?
Are you able to compartmentalize, and thus to function most of the time?
Are you checking with others for their discernment or do you see yourself as the only one carrying a burden?
Is spiritual voyeurism involved in your burden bearing?
When is burden bearing not a blessing?
