Deep brain stimulation surgeries are not decided by a single physician. We hospitalize our patients in the Neuromodulation center for a few days in order to find out whether the patients with the Parkinson's disease are suitable for surgery. During this period, our experienced movement disorder neurologists firstly check whether the most appropriate drug treatment has been administered. If necessary, we add new drugs. Next, detailed tests are administered by our neurologists to evaluate the severity of Parkinson's disease during the medication “On” and “Off” periods. Based on the results of these tests, we decide whether DBS surgery is suitable for the patient or not. If the patient is suitable for surgery, they are subjected to a detailed examination by our psychiatrist. Our neuropsychologists also perform detailed neuropsychological tests in order to evaluate possible dementia or cognitive conditions. We also need a brain MRI scan for all of our patients, for determining whether there is any obstacle for the surgery. In addition, a pre-operative examination is carried out by our anesthesiologist in order to eliminate conditions that would hinder the operation. At the end of this 3-day process, with the joint decision of our neurologists , neurosurgeons, psychiatrists and neuropsychologist working in our center, we decide whether our patient is suitable for the deep brain stimulation surgery. We inform our patients ,who are eligible for surgery, about our evaluation results, explain the possible healing effects and possible risks of the surgery in detail. If they agree, we make an appointment for surgery after a certain time and afterwards we discharge them with necessary recommendations. For the patients, who are not suitable for the surgery, we explain the reasons for the decision, arrange their medication, and discharge them by making a control appointment with the necessary recommendations.
