On April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. Lee’s army was surrounded, exhausted, and running out of supplies, marking the final chapter of the Civil War.

Grant’s terms were unexpectedly generous. Confederate soldiers were allowed to return home. Officers kept their sidearms and horses. No punishments were issued. With that single meeting, four years of devastating conflict came to an end.
