Can’t buy a thrill has always been my favourite Steely Dan album. Unlike most of their later albums this album feels like a band, and it has more of spontaneous vibe to it. In the mid to late 70’s Steely Dan really became known for only officially being two members, Donald Fagen and Walter Brecker. Can’t Buy a Thrill also has two of their best known songs, Reelin’ in the Years and Do It Again. It also has four phenomenal guitar players including: Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Elliot Randall Walter Brecker and Denny Dias.

Every Steely Dan guitar solo was, and is still considered extremely important, and I thought this particular guitar solo fro Kings hasn’t been covered a lot online so this seemed an appropriate choice. At first I thought it was Jeff but then I realized it was Elliot. I love how weird and quirky it is. It starts with a descending 2nd interval which is pretty jarring, and then it goes into a pull-off lick with a weird overdub, and then it does an ascending whole-tone scale lick. Even with all this weirdness going on it still manages to fit perfectly over the chords. I had a lot of fun covering this, and it only makes me want to cover more Steely Dan
