Often referred to as "The Six Syllables that destroy all evil", Om Mani Padme Hum is an ancient Buddhist mantra said to have been given to the Sangha (community of monks and nuns) directly from the Buddha himself. Literally translating as "Praise to the Jewel in the Lotus", it is believed that each Six Syllables destroys or purifies what the Buddha called "the Six Negative Emotions or Mental States" responsible for the Six Realms of Samsara (Cycles of Suffering and Reincarnation).

The Six Syllables and their corresponding color, quality and Samsaric Realm:

Om - Color: white. Illuminates the "Realm of Heavenly or Celestial Beings." Invokes our innate Compassion and Generosity. Cleanses and purifies the negative quality of False Pride or Arrogance.

Ma - Color: green. Illuminates the "Non-Celestial Realm of the Asuras (Demons)". Invokes our innate sense of ethics and morality. Cleanses and purifies the negative quality of Jealousy.

Ni - Color: yellow. Illuminates the Maniloka or the "Realm of Human Beings". Invokes our innate nature of patience and forebearance. Cleanses and purifies our negative passions and desires.

Pad - Color: blue. Illuminates the "Realm of Animals". Invokes our innate diligence and dedication. Cleanses and purifies the negative qualities of ignorance and prejudice.

Me- Color: red. Illuminates the "Realm of Hungry Ghosts". Invokes our innate capacity to renounce that which is unessential to enlightenment. Cleanses and purifies the negative qualities of possessiveness and greed.

Hum - Color: black. Illuminates the "Realm of Hell or Hell Beings". Invokes our innate state of Prajna or Wisdom. Cleanses and purifies the negative qualities of aggression and hatred.
