Born In Metairie, Louisiana In 1958, Ellen Lee Degeneres Turned To Comic Relief At A Young Age To Help Her Mother Cope After Her Parents Divorced.

She Worked Several Jobs... Including A House Painter And Oyster Shucker Before Getting Her Start In Comedy At Emceeing Clyde's Comedy Club In 1981.

Ellen's Older Brother Vance Was A Member Of The 80s Rock Band, "House Of Shrock." She Told People Magazine "That's What Motivated Me To Do Something, Because I Watched Him Get All The Attention And Glory."

At The Age Of 21, Degeneres Had Fallen In Love With Poet Kathy Perkoff. The Couple Dated From The Late 70s Until Kathy Passed In A Car Accident In 1980. The Tragedy Was Inspiration For Ellen's First Monologue "Phone Call To God." The Routine Won Her Showtime's Funniest Person In America Award In 1982.

In 1986, Ellen Landed Her Big Debut When "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" Sent A Booking Agent To Catch Her Act At The Improv In Hollywood. She Became The Only Female Comic To Be Invited By Carson To Sit On The Famed Couch. After Her First Visit, She Became A Regular On The Talk Show Circuit And Performed On Shows Like "The Late Show With David Letterman," "The Tonight Show," "Larry King Live" And "Good Morning America."

Degeneres Went On To Show Off Her Acting Skills In Two Short-lived Tv Sitcoms, "Laurie Hill," And "Open House" Which Features Ellen As Margo Van Meter. Her Character Displayed Her Wacky Sense Of Humor And Hollywood Agents Loved It.

She Finally Found Stardom As An Actress In Abc's Sitcom "These Friends Of Mine." The Series Was Renamed To "Ellen" In 1994 And Ran For 5 Seasons. The Show Earned Degeneres Four Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy Nominations, A Writing Emmy Win And Three Golden Globe Nominations.

In 1997, Ellen Publicly Came Out On The Cover Of Time Magazine, Making Her TV's First Openly Gay Star. She Announced Her Relationship With Actress Anne Heche To People Magazine The Same Year. Facing A Storm Of Criticism And Ratings Declining, The Ellen Show Went Off Air In 1998.

None Of The Critics Could Keep Ellen Of The Silver Screen Though...She Starred In The Dark Comedy "Mr. Wrong" In 1996, "EdTV" Three Years Later And Then Shared A Much Publicized Love Scene With Sharon Stone In "If These Walls Could Talk 2."

After 3 ½ Years, Heche And Ellen Call It Quits.

She Returned To Television In 2003 With Her Daytime Talk Show, "Ellen: The Ellen Degeneres Talk Show." It Proved Successful Winning 15 Emmy Awards In Its First Three Seasons On Air.

In The Same Year, Ellen Voiced Dory, A Neurotic Fish With A Memory Problem, In Disney's 'Finding Nemo'. The Movie Was Incredibly Popular And Grossed $860 Million Worldwide And Won For Best Animated Feature At The Oscars.

Ellen's Dance Moves, A-list Guests And Humor Launch Her Show Back Into The Spotlight. She Told W "I Want The Show To Reach People And To Be Something Positive."
