A vehicle CV axle (Constant Velocity axle), also called a half-shaft, is the shaft that transfers power from the transmission or differential to the drive wheels while allowing the suspension and steering to move.

What it does
• Delivers engine torque to the wheels
• Allows wheels to turn left and right (steering)
• Allows wheels to move up and down with the suspension
• Keeps power delivery smooth at all angles

Where it’s located
• On front-wheel-drive vehicles:
From the transmission → front wheels
• On AWD/4WD vehicles:
At the driven wheels (front and/or rear)

Each driven wheel usually has one CV axle.

Main parts
• Inner CV joint (connects to transmission/differential)
• Outer CV joint (connects to wheel hub)
• Axle shaft
• CV boots (rubber boots filled with grease)

Signs of a bad CV axle
• Clicking or popping when turning (especially accelerating)
• Vibration while driving
• Grease splattered around wheel or suspension (torn boot)
• Clunking when shifting from drive to reverse

Common causes of failure
• Torn CV boot → grease leaks out → joint wears fast
• High mileage wear
• Aggressive driving or lifted suspension

Why it matters

If a CV axle fails completely:
• The vehicle may lose drive to that wheel
• In some cases, you won’t be able to move at all

Maintenance tip
• Catching a torn CV boot early can save the axle
• Once the joint clicks, the axle usually needs replacement
