Running Walk Description and How To Ride It - Tennessee Walking Horses - Minnie and Tilley -Gaited

Описание к видео Running Walk Description and How To Ride It - Tennessee Walking Horses - Minnie and Tilley -Gaited

The running walk is a smooth comfortable gait. Ranging from 5-10 mph. It is a clear 4 beat gait, with each foot landing separately. The horse will reach over its front hoof print with its hind leg, any where from reaching just into the footprint to reaching several feet over the hoof print.

The Tennessee Walking Horse is known for the running walk, but other breeds can also sometimes do a running walk. When the horse is doing a running walk it will nod its head up and down with the rhythm of the walk. If its not nodding then its not doing a running walk.

The legs stay close to the ground and move in a sweeping motion, with the hindquarter dropping down and the horse driving with its backend and pulling with its front end. There is usually a back and forth motion in the saddle, but some are extremely smooth and there will not be much motion at all.

Both these mares do not have much over stride, but they still have a nice head shake. You will see since they do not have a large over stride there is not much motion in the saddle. You must first establish a good flat walk before trying to get a running walk. This may take 3 months or more to condition the horse well enough. If done correctly, all you have to do is speed up once they are condition and then half halt and use your seat and legs to keep the speed. If the horse is on the trotty side, keep its head higher and if on the pacey side, keep its head lower.

If done incorrectly and your horse does not have a clear 4 beat foot fall in its flat walk, then when you go to speed up, they may pace, trot or step pace instead of doing a running walk.

It takes time, patience and conditioning to get a great running walk. It is a fun smooth and comfortable gait that your horse can do for long periods of time. So take the time and get a good flat walk before moving to a running walk, you will be happy you did.
