When it comes to historic buildings, a roof leak could turn into a $600,000 emergency demolition.

That's what happened to a 160-year-old building in Albany this August. The city's streets are filled with old buildings like that one, and Kim Alvarez is intent on saving them.

Alvarez recently and abruptly became the executive director of the Historic Albany Foundation because she was trying to do just that: save the city's oldest building dating back to 1728.

She says preserving what remains of Albany's past is key to creating an appreciation for its history. Just consider, Alvarez says, that Boston's picturesque cobblestone streets and brick buildings draw countless visitors to the city's historic sites each year.
