Outgoing New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed deep concern about the safety of Jewish New Yorkers under incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdani, citing rising antisemitism and worrying rhetoric. Adams highlighted that Mamdani, a far-left democratic socialist and anti-Zionist, has supported boycotts of Israeli-affiliated entities, labeled Israel as practicing “apartheid” and “genocide,” and declined to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada,” linked to violence against Jews and Israelis. Adams warned that Jewish families should be cautious as the city faces increased antisemitic threats. He noted that antisemitism is spreading among younger generations through social media and organized campaigns, urging Jewish organizations to develop strong strategies to counteract hate. Adams also expressed doubt that Mamdani’s administration will prioritize unifying the city, emphasizing that leadership involves both symbolic and substantive actions, and that public statements influence community behavior. At a gathering hosted by the Combat Antisemitism Movement in Tel Aviv, CAM CEO Sacha Roytman praised Adams’ work combating antisemitism, including creating the city’s first mayoral office dedicated to the issue, signing an executive order adopting the IHRA definition, establishing a Jewish Advisory Council, and launching the NYC-Israel Economic Council. Adams reflected on his tenure as a relay, passing lessons to the next administration, and suggested he might maintain ties to Israel in the future.
