There is no denying the promising opportunities for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in healthcare. But the introduction goes slowly, and that is largely because there is always a desire and demand by the healthcare field to carefully assess these complex data-driven AI algorithms before they are to be applied and disseminated in daily healthcare. How can we guarantee that these AI applications live up to our desired standards, and how can we assess their quality in healthcare? The Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport asked more than 50 field experts and healthcare professionals from all possible disciplines to research what they consider good professional conduct in developing, testing, and implementing AI algorithms in the healthcare sector, including in the public and prevention healthcare sector. The research, led by Prof Dr Carl Moons, resulted in a publicly accessible set of criteria and an online course that healthcare organisations and providers, citizens, patients, insurance companies and policymakers, AI developers and manufacturers will benefit from. This research also enlarges trust and uniformity when developing, purchasing, using or having AI-driven devices used on them.

In this session, Prof Dr Carl Moons will share more about the guidelines for assessing AI algorithms, their process and how they are used to accelerate the introduction of MedTech innovations in the Dutch nationwide health technology infrastructure of HI-NL (www.healthinnovation.nl) to meet end-user needs.
