The problems many small and regional businesses are facing are not merely due to the temporary economic shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. They face problems because their leadership rarely anticipate and prepare for the global challenges that require effective crisis leadership, especially in semi or non-autonomous settings which define success for today’s organisations and tomorrow’s.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses have been narrowly structured around mainly autonomous self-contained, traditional functions such as cash-flow, human resourcing, marketing, customers, strategic planning and so on. Whilst these are important, the pandemic has shown that these functions on their own are hardly the building blocks of success in today’s business environment. The volatile systems of supply and demand present new organisational challenges namely; crisis management, diversity and teamwork, remote working, ethics and resilient programmes for which these traditional functions are largely inadequate.

To rise to these challenges, business owners and organisational leaders must integrate the philosophy of crisis leadership in their new vision of success during and post-COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaker:
Paschal Anosike is Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Director of the Centre for African Entrepreneurship and Leadership (CAEL) at the University of Wolverhampton. He lectures in Leadership and Human Resource Practice in Organisations. His research in entrepreneurship and innovation has guided over 30 organisations to build sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems for human capabilities and inclusive growth. He has also chaired international expert groups and spoken widely on these topics, including several keynotes. He is the Associate Editor of International Journal of Management Practice.

Paschal is a recipient of The Guardian University Awards 2014 and the African Union Award for his contributions to the field of small business development and entrepreneurship education. He is an adviser to the London-based think-tank Legatum Institute (LI). Previously, he advised The Commonwealth, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), British Council and the German Development Agency - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
