Circumstances of death: Yakiv was with Colonel Boris Borisovich Kyforenko. He was riding in a communications armored personnel carrier with the number 004 in front of Colonel Kyforenko's UAZ. They died together on August 29, 2014 while escaping from the encirclement near the city. Ilovaisk (village of Novokaterinivka, Starobeshiv district, Donetsk region).
The armored personnel carrier was hit and the entire crew was killed: soldier Solodovnik Evgen Olegovich (driver-mechanic), junior sergeant Yurkovets Igor Volodymyrovych, and major Guba Yakiv Mykolayovych. On August 30, 2014, the body, along with the bodies of 87 other victims of the so-called Ilovaisk Cauldron, was brought to the Zaporizhia morgue. Temporarily buried at the Kushugum cemetery in Zaporizhia, as an unidentified hero under number 3253. He was identified by DNA tests. Reburied on January 17, 2015.
Colonel Andriy Grigorovich Melashchenko: "Major Guba Yakiv Mykolayovych carried out the task of providing communications to the leader and management of sector "B" during the Ilovaisk operation. His efforts ensured stable uninterrupted communication with subordinate units.
He repeatedly courageously and heroically, under enemy artillery fire, risking his life, under a barrage of enemy bullets and shrapnel, restored the operation of the antenna devices of the communication facilities, which allowed the command to control the actions of the troops in the conditions of encirclement, provided an opportunity to organize the evacuation of the wounded and helped save more than one human life.
On August 29, 2014, during the withdrawal of the group of troops from the encirclement near the city of Ilovaisk, Khartsyz district, Donetsk region, the crew of the complex communications equipment under the leadership of Major Guba Yakiv Mykolayovych was assigned the important task of providing communications to the units that were breaking through the battle with environment.
After the failure of the main trunking communication repeater, during the battle, at the cost of incredible efforts in the conditions of a furious barrage of fire that the enemy directed at the command and staff vehicle, thanks to special courage, at the risk of his life, he set up the backup repeater, which made it possible to continue controlling the units and organizing interaction.
When the communications APC fell into a tight ring of encirclement of Russian troops, Major Guba Ya.M. did not give up and courageously made a decision for his last battle in his life, did not allow the enemy to seize the means of communication. At the cost of his own life, he continued to carry out the task of providing communications.
