Once home to some of the rarest, oldest forests on Planet Earth, the province of Gorontalo in Sulawesi, Indonesia, is now under threat from a supposedly “renewable” industry: biomass. The forest-rich province now sits on the proverbial chopping block, with thousands of acres of trees being cut and exported to fuel “clean” energy power plants in South Korea and Japan.
In SFOC’s latest documentary, a multinational team goes on the ground in Gorontalo to expose the biomass industry’s ugly underbelly, revealing its role in displacing local communities, disrupting ecosystems and worsening climate-related disasters like floods.

The findings lay bare the flawed systems upholding the faulty notion of biomass as a carbon-neutral, renewable energy source and how the industry’s greenwashing is outsourcing the impacts of South Korea and Japan’s carbon footprint to those affected the most by climate change.
