Eschatology- Montanists had a heightened sense of the imminent return of Christ and the coming of the New Jerusalem, often engaging in ecstatic and enthusiastic worship.

Montanism arose during a time of increasing institutionalization within the early Christian church. The mainstream church viewed Montanism as a threat to ecclesiastical order because it undermined the authority of established bishops and introduced new doctrines that were seen as heretical.

The movement was eventually condemned by church leaders, including prominent figures like Bishop Serapion of Antioch and Tertullian, although Tertullian himself later became an adherent of Montanism. By the 4th century, Montanism had largely been suppressed, though it persisted in some areas for several centuries.
