"A good working man tool box at an affordable price"
Pros:
• Lightweight
• $299 price tag
• Lid had stiffeners (compare to other toolboxes of which did not have any)
• Handles work well
• Low profile option for the midsize truck
• 5-year “limited” Warranty
Cons:
• No mounting hardware included
• No D-rings
• No Matte black color option
• Handles are not perfectly offset from ends (1/2” off on one side).
• Unattractive welds
• Made in Mexico
• Lid stiffeners need to be little thicker or strong material
I’m sure you thinking after reading the Pros and Cons, that I must dislike this toolbox. Despite its flaws, this is a good toolbox, and it meets my needs. I’ve spent a lot time researching and driving to the stores, to evaluate truck toolboxes. Sadly there are not a whole lot of options for the mid-size truck, or in my case the Ford Ranger. This box is one of the few boxes with the low profile option and has a lot of storage room, and still has room in your bed. I’m going to quickly run though my cons list, as for the pros I believe they can speak for themselves. First no mounting hardware was included with the $299 price tag, so now you have to buy something extra to mount your box. They try get you sold on the Grip-Rite but there $25.48 for a pair, just go read the reviews and you’ll see why people don’t use them. I personally went a cheaper route and used (4) 5/16” X 3” J-bolts, fender washers, and self-locking nuts (total of $6). The next two are both personal preferences, the D-ring and Matte black. Honestly it’s nice to have something to tie down or even lock something. I went ahead and added some D-rings to mine, because I needed a way to secure my ladder. I believe adding D-rings and the Matte black color option to this box would help bump up the quality. Speaking of Matte black, I cannot understand why this is not an available option, as it is a popular tend now. The fourth con is something I recently discover while mounting the D-rings to the toolbox. The handles are not equally offset from the ends, one side is 3 ½” while the other is 4”. While this not to noticeable, it does beg the question of why is it off by a ½”in the first place. For the life of me, I couldn’t think of any reason why it is like this, other than someone could not read a measuring tape. Moving along, let’s talk about the unattractive welds that are all over the entire box. While the outside welds has been cleaned up and made pretty (somewhat), the same cannot be said about the inside. It’s literally a mess but, not as bad as the ones I have seen at tractor supply. Now this product is made outside the U.S.A. which in my book is an automatic, you lose a star rating. Lastly I will mention about the lid stiffeners, while its great that they adding some to help keep the lid from warping. In my opinion the stiffeners need to be a little thicker gauge, mainly because you can’t put anything to massive on top of the lid, without it popping in. Now, you may be asking yourself why does this matter? When all is said and done, it doesn’t, until the one time you put something on top of it. Over all I still think this is a good truck box, and worth the money, despite the flaws. Nothing is ever perfect, but this is the closest truck box to suit my needs.
