The parathyroid glands (located near the thyroid) make a hormone called PTH. This hormone helps manage the levels of calcium and phosphorus in your body. This causes PTH levels to rise, leading to a condition called secondary hyperparathyroidism—a common issue for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
